Building South Africa’s digital future — together

A message from the Managing Director of SITA

Building Towards Digital Sovereignty: South Africa as Architect of its Digital Destiny for Citizens

GovTech has, for over two decades, been South Africa’s foremost platform for digital government dialogue, collaboration, and innovation. As we gather for GovTech 2026, we do so at a defining moment, one that demands not only reflection on how far we have come, but deliberate action on where we must go.

In my first year as Managing Director of SITA, I am deeply encouraged by the momentum building across government and industry. The question before us is no longer whether to transform, but it is how boldly and how swiftly we do so. The choices we make today on connectivity, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure will determine the quality of public services for generations to come.

SITA’s strategic intent is clear. We are committed to:

  • Cybersecurity and digital trust
  • Interoperable and integrated government systems
  • Sovereign digital capability
  • Connectivity and digital inclusion
  • AI-driven citizen-centred public services

None of this is achievable in isolation. The future of digital government requires genuine partnership anchored on public and private sector collaboration across all spheres of government, and with deliberate investment in African talent and innovation. GovTech 2026 is the platform where those partnerships are formed, tested, and advanced.

I invite every delegate, exhibitor, sponsor, and innovator to engage fully and attend, sponsor, nominate a team for the Digital Public Service Awards, pitch in the SMME showcase, or contribute to the Hackathon. Our collective success will be measured by one outcome: citizens experiencing government services that are more accessible, responsive, and secure.

Let us seize this opportunity to act decisively and together shape a digital future worthy of our citizens and our continent.
